Their relationship was barely two months old when she moved in with Kambili.
Kambili who had been praying not to have an elaborate wedding the second time, was happy that Chioma had made it easier for him by moving in with him.
He only went to her family and paid the bride price and did other necessary procedures.
They lived together as husband and wife.
In no time she got pregnant. Kambili registered her for antenatal in the best hospital around their place. He warned her never to miss her antenatal classes.
He was just trying to be more cautious.
She did as he said.
As her expected date of delivery was drawing nearer, Kambili was always asking her how she felt. He took good care of her. He provided all she needed and was always available for her.
Chioma was visiting the hospital regularly.
When she started having stronger signs of labour, Kambili drove her to the hospital.
The midwife on duty checked her body and moved her immediately to the labour room.
"Thank goodness you people came early enough, in no time, you will carry your baby," the midwife assured them.
"Ok ma," Kambili said.
Chioma climbed the delivery table and the midwives advised her on what to do.
Kambili was in the waiting room praying and hoping to hear good news.
He had waited for more than an hour and none of the midwives had come out to meet him as he expected.
He was worried.
He nervously walked around the waiting room.
One of the midwives opened the door, Kambili rushed to go and meet her but she quickly walked past him and left.
Kambili was confused.
He was still there thinking of what next to do when the nurse returned with a doctor.
"Please what's happening."
"Sir, you need to calm do, labour isn't progressing. We are considering an emergency cesarian section, you need to come with us," the doctor said.
Kambili was agitated, his heart was racing.
They gave him the consent form and he signed it.
He requested to see her. He followed them to the delivery room and saw Chioma lying down helplessly and weak.
He got closer, held her hands and encouraged her.
He turned to the doctor.
"Please, whatever happens, save my wife and my child."
"Ok."
The doctor asked the midwives to move her to the theatre.
As they were leaving for the theatre, Chioma began to scream. They stopped.
"What is it," one of the midwives asked.
"Please!! Please!!," she continued screaming, pointing at a space. They held her.
Kambili was frightened.
Then she gave a louder scream and lost consciousness.
Kambili rushed to where she was.
"Chioma! Chi..!!" he stuttered as he tried to revive her.
The doctor excused him and quickly wore her a bag-mask device connected to an oxygen source but it seemed to be too late.
The doctor removed the mask and checked her heartbeat and that of the baby. He discovered that both had stopped breathing.
"Doctor what is happening."
"I'm sorry, we lost her and the baby."
"Oh my God! What is happening to me?" Kambili wailed at the labour room.
He was led out of the labour ward. He sat in the waiting room devastated. He managed to call his uncle and informed him.
His uncle came immediately.
Kambili saw him coming and couldn't hold his tears.
"Not again, this can't be happening again. Who did we offend?" his uncle said.
He held Kambili close to his chest.
"My son ndo oo, I must get to the root of this."
Kambili wept uncontrollably.
